Welcome to DahlMusic!

Guitar, Bass Composer, Home Studio

Hi, I'm Bryon Dahl located in the Minneapolis/St Paul area.  I will be filling this site with guitars I have built, music gear for sale, audio tracks from my studio collection, lesson material, important links and anything else as it relates to DahlMusic…

If you like what you see & hear, please be in touch, I'm always looking to expand the effort!

Sound Reason

Bryon Dahl/Guitar
Joan Schubert/Flute
Jim Oestereich/Piano
Chris Petersen/Bass

After long musical friendships of teaching, rehearsing and performing together, we finally decided it was time to capture our sound in the studio.  We sure have enjoyed the time spent, we hope you enjoy the result!
Back in the 90's, the Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) was revolutionizing home recording.  I got in on the action with Cakewalk, a computer-based recording software which was the industry standard at that time.  My sound generator of choice, the Korg 05R/W, still stands the test of time!
Speaking of timeless, check out my MIDI demos:

A "rescue" bass becomes a prized member of the family...

J-Bass Style

Originally built by Pete of Pete's Guitars, I bought this bass from Knut-Koupee in the early 90's (memory check).  The unfinished Warmoth body was spray painted blue.  I carefully stripped it down to the bare wood and gave it a beautiful clear finish.  I added a Warmoth maple neck with an ebony fingerboard which I also finished.  The pickups are early EMG's.  It looks, plays and sounds like a dream!

This studio page is under construction:
However, I wanted to get started now and will continue to add content as we go along.

Joan and I recorded our CD in my studio using Pro Tools on a MacBook Pro.  Other recording software I have available is Logic Pro X, Ableton Live 10 and Native Instruments Maschine 2.  For additional plugins, I use NI Komplete Kontrol and the Waves Gold Bundle.

Below is a rundown of my gear soon to be followed by any and all ongoing projects.

Native Instruments gear is very well matched.  My Maschine Jam & Komplete Kontrol S25 are designed to work together seamlessly as a music production system.

Both pieces can be assigned to Maschine 2, Logic Pro X and Ableton Live 10 while accessing Komplete Kontrol and the Waves Gold Bundle.

Remote creations on the iMaschine 2 app for iOS can easily be uploaded to a studio project.

The finest in modern Synth Guitar

The finest in modern Synth Guitar

Synth guitar has come a long way from the 80's monophonic, limited sample rigs.  The Roland GR-55 has a vast palette with remarkable tracking.  I added the Roland GK-3 synth pickup to one of my builds making it truly versatile.  A three way switch allows for synth only, guitar pickups only or in combo.  My Godin ACS Nylon Natural SG has equal versatility.

Both guitars offer their own textural qualities while complimenting a traditional piano/MIDI controller and music production system such as my NI Maschine Jam.

And joining us on Joan's Blues...
(with special guest Phil Hey on Drums)
I was raised in a very musical family and I began playing instruments at the age of eight years old. I have been playing bass guitar since the age of twelve. My father (Drummer) and my Uncle (Lead Guitarist) are Iowa Rock n Roll Hall of Fame inductees. Growing up around a Southern Rock band has had a huge influence on me musically. I studied music theory privately with Bryon Dahl for several years while in high school. He helped me infuse jazz theory with my rock background to mold my style to what it is today.
JimO has two university degrees and also studied at The Berklee College of Music in Boston. He is a composer as well as performer and teaches sound design classes. Jim's musical work is frequently on display at MCTC during their play and musical performances.
